Just three days ago was the artist Keith Haring’s (59th) Birthday.
My blog post is to simply keep his memory fresh and alive! Many people have claimed to be influenced by him and many more have benefited from making such claims while they in broad daylight paint their version of ‘Street Art’ for the world to see.

That’s cool if you can get away with it and not get arrested.
Even Keith knew the job at hand was a risk so he made sure to have someone with him photographer Tseng Kwon Chi to document just about all of his activities and use the (one) arrest as a marketing tool to finally be Identified as the chalk using graffiti artist whose humanoid figures touched everyone who encountered them.

This is the backside of an envelope sent to me from ‘Act-Up’ an organization that was formed out of frustration back in the late 1980’s because of the ignorance the general public had about the many issues that had taken place. Now without going into too much detail about the past, I often wonder ?,What is going on today?I get into many conversations about the things we have created for our convience comming back to haunt us, and I’m kind of spooked.
The more I find out each day about the conduct of other people and how their actions effect all of us who live in the US or elsewhere. I can’t believe how far we have been removed from nature itself or, Have we digressed into some primal need to servive and don’t really care about the one’s we use as our stepping stone or to make money off of.I recently watched a film about the auto industry and I was shocked.
I will not disclose anything other than it is a shame what is going on in the minds of some of the people you trust to look out for you.I have been around since the gas shortage of the 1970’s and it was weird how solar powered cars(or electric) were the talk of the town. Now there is a new interest in the technology but it was something there all along. After I had my first experience showing my art in New York and I didn’t become an overnight sensation it took about two years before I exhibited my work again.Back then there were a lot of galleries that were looking for the next wave of art stars and they would promote anyone just as long as you had the money to pay the membership fees that were required. These places were called vanity galleries and they were all over Soho just shortly after the east village scene had spawned the first wave of downtown luminaries.I was caught up in the fame and fortune scenario and so I joined a gallery that I thought would give me that boost that I felt I needed to catch up with my contemporaries. At this point in my life I had already met Keith and had begun producing art at an alarming rate to build my inventory up to compete with the big boys who were selling work like hotcakes. You had to be on a waiting list just to get your hands on some of the art being produced by these artist that had legitimate galleries promoting their work.
Although I had a great time at the opening of this show I didn’t get much out of it so I broke my contract with the gallery and decided to just concentrate on finding my own style of painting because I knew that I couldn’t keep on producing the kind of work that I was doing at that time.If you notice, the figures are very close to the work of Haring but done with straight lines instead of the curved chalk figures that he did in the subways.RedSaid
